ABOUT THE ARTIST/BIOGRAPHY
Pianist/Composer/Improviser his music making includes classical piano recitals and solo appearances with orchestra, new music performances as soloist and collaborator, jazz improvisations, and presentations (in the 70's) of his multi-media electronic ensemble – Electric Stereopticon.
JB Floyd was composing at the age of 12 in the style of boogie-woogie emulations of the great pianists, Pete Johnson and Albert Ammons, whose recordings were somehow available to him at the time even in the backwoods of East Texas. Following always his interests in both classical and jazz genres, Floyd emerged as a formidable performer in both paths of musical expression and also developed his own voice as a composer bridging both styles.

This recording highlights the three main strands of Floyd's career: pianist, composer, improvisor. He composed In Crossing the Busy Street for baritone Thomas Buckner (a frequent collaborator of his) and piano, using a poem by Daniel Abdal-Hayy Moore. |

DAVID ROSENBOOM, JB FLOYD & TRICHY SANKARAN / Suitable for FramingOn April 19th, 1975, at Northern Illinois University, three musicians met in a milestone event from which emerged a unique, improvising trio with two pianos and South Indian percussion. Fortunately, it was recorded and excerpts released on a long out of print LP. This CD recaptures the essential essence of the entire evening of musical discovery with previously unreleased music recovered from digitally reprocessed tapes recently discovered in diverse states of preservation.

Floyd’s music is keyboard centered and for many years he has explored the fascinating musical possibilities of the YAMAHA Disklavier in his works. The music presented here combines voice and other instruments with the Disklavier and, as in all of Floyd’s work, reveals his abiding interest in jazz and free improvisation. The musical materials are developed from and gently guided by a serial plan.
